The obsession began young, in tiny Palm Springs hotels where the ice machine sounded like a lawnmower and the pool turned our hair a suspicious shade of summer. Every trip since, fancy or feral, has taught us something about history, culture, food and ourselves. (Also sunscreen. It taught us sunscreen.)

Then came traveling with young kids, where efficiency stopped being a personality trait and became survival. We learned to pack light, glide through security and build days that balance museum magic with gelato breaks at strategic intervals.
