A Birthday at Nemacolin: Pennsylvania's Most Surprising Luxury Escape

Three nights at The Chateau, about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh.

When people picture a luxury birthday trip, they picture a long flight. We drove. Nemacolin sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, and it is one of the most quietly extraordinary resorts in the country.

Where to stay: The Chateau Club

We stayed in a Chateau Club King Suite at The Chateau, the resort's French-inspired centerpiece. It reopened in 2024 after a full renovation: marble, chandeliers, soaking tubs, and white-glove butler service for every guest.

The Club level is the upgrade I'd recommend to anyone celebrating something. It comes with access to the Club Lounge, and The Chateau Club is one of the best-stocked, best-maintained lounges of any hotel I've ever stayed in. I loved it so much I camped out there for half a day to work before the spa, the pool and dinner.

Travel tip: ask about packages before you book. We booked the resort's summer escape package, and seasonal packages can bundle in credits that make a longer stay worth it.

Slow evenings

The Chateau is built for lingering: afternoon tea in The Bleu Room, a drink at the Lobby Bar, and in summer, live cabaret and craft cocktails at Nightcap. There's also an ice cream parlor, which is exactly as charming as it sounds.

The spa is the reason to go

Nemacolin has one of the best spas anywhere, and I don't say that lightly. I booked the 120-minute Mystical massage with Jessica F., and it is honestly one of the best experiences I've had in my life. If you go, ask for her by name.

The Woodlands Spa is built for spending the whole day:

  • Sauna, steam room and whirlpool

  • A four-lane indoor lap pool, heated to 84 degrees year-round

  • The Fireside Lounge. Warm and cozy, but upscale and serene. It's where I'd happily spend an afternoon between treatments.

  • A fabulous spa menu to keep you going through the day, so there's no reason to leave.

Travel tip: book your treatments when you book the room. The best therapists and the longest treatments fill first. Nemacolin also sends a pre-arrival amenity form; use it for dinner reservations and any special touches for the occasion.

Not a spa person? Book a cabana

If the spa isn't your thing, a poolside cabana is a great alternative. There's a family area and an adults-only area, so you can choose the mood. Expect a spectacular menu, excellent cocktails and super attentive staff who keep everything coming without you lifting a finger.

Travel tip: reserve your cabana in advance, especially on summer weekends, and say which area you want.

Dinner, golf and getting around

Nemacolin's restaurants are first rate, and Gusto is my favorite. Golfers will be happy too: the courses are award-winning.

For the birthday dinner itself, book Lautrec, the resort's Forbes Five-Star restaurant. It was the most divine dinner we've had in a long time. Superb.

The resort is sprawling, but you never have to think about logistics. Every hotel has butler service, and the resort runs car service between its properties around the clock. After dinner, a car takes you back to your hotel with ease.

And if you're flying in privately, Nemacolin has its own private landing strip, so you can bring your own jet.

Why it works for a celebration

  • No flights (for Western PA folks). A long weekend feels twice as long when you don't lose a day to airports.

  • Everything is on property. A world-class spa, golf, dining and nightlife, so there's no planning once you arrive.

  • It feels far away. The Laurel Highlands are green, quiet and genuinely restful.

Who should go

Anyone who wants a truly luxurious experience should put Nemacolin on their list. Each hotel on the property has a different feel, but every one of them is superior and luxurious, and the staff are consistently incredible.

Good to know

  • Getting there: about 75 miles from Pittsburgh by car, or fly privately into the resort's own landing strip.

  • Cancellation: the resort asks for 7 days' notice. Book with that in mind.

  • Best for: anyone who wants true luxury without a long flight: birthdays, anniversaries, couples' getaways and family celebrations.
